Lodging Accommodations
Lodging accommodations should be reserved
ahead of time. Do your research on the Internet and then call
the motel directly where you want to stay, and ask for the rock
bottom price. Say, "What is the lowest price you can give me?" THEN
ask about special discounts: Seniors, students, government, membership
(such as AAA) or corporate rates. Use any valid reason you might
have, such as staying several nights, to get your room price
lowered.
Don't settle for the first quote given. Don't settle even for the second one without trying to do better. Ask if they can give you a better price. Most people will just pay whatever is asked, but motel room rates are extremely flexible and you should take advantage of that.
Take advantage of freebies. Does the hotel
you’ll be staying at offer a complimentary breakfast? If so, don’t
pass up a free meal. Find out what time breakfast is served,
and make sure your family is up and in line.
Make sure you look for a hotel where kids stay free and where guestrooms are equipped with a fridge and a microwave. A suite where the rooms have a small kitchen might be accommodating as well depending on the length of your stay and the number of guests. You then will be able to pick up food and store it, opposed to spending more at restaurants.
Consider alternatives to traditional lodging.
- Campus accommodation. Call up colleges and universities in the vicinity of your vacation and ask if they rent out rooms during the time of your vacation.
- Exchange homes. Another way to save money on vacation while traveling is to do a house exchange. If your house is in an attractive area, contact house exchange associations to see if anyone is interested in doing an exchange.
- Short Trips. Make daytrips so you can stay at home or go camping.
