Buying Vacation Necessities

When you travel to a different part of the world, or even a different part of your own state, you're going to need different things, and if you wait until the week or even month before you go, you could have trouble finding those things at a cheap price.

Whether you plan to bicycle your way across a state, fly around the world or something in between, there are some basic things you can do months ahead to cut the cost of your next vacation.

Almost any vacation calls for special clothing of some sort. If you're traveling to a different climate or doing something you don't do every day, you'll probably have to buy clothes just for that. Hiking in the Rockies, sight seeing in Paris or playing at the lake with your family require different types of clothing.

Make as complete a list as possible of what you will need. Then go about finding those items at the lowest prices possible. Watch the sales, of course, and haunt the thrift shops with list in hand. Keep an eye out for "going out of business" sales, and trek the garage sale route. Start your shopping while you have plenty of time so if you don't find what you need this week, you can wait until next week or next month. You don't have to buy it all right now if you start early enough. Take your time and you'll save money.

Transportation is of great importance regardless of how you travel, so it's really wise to make decisions early. Decide whether you'll drive, ride or fly. Look for airfare and other discounts. A few months ahead is not too early! If you intend to drive, check your tires and decide when and where to get that final tune up and oil change before you hit the road. Make sure your vehicle is in tiptop shape before you start. It can save you emergency repair costs and a lot more, including stress, during the trip.

Check your luggage and replace, repair or substitute where you need to. You've got time, so look for the best deal possible. Again, watch for sales, and don't forget that garage sales and thrift shops sometimes have amazing bargains.

Luggage doesn't have to match. You're better off with just the most appropriate piece from one or more "sets," instead of a whole set. Think carefully about which style of luggage you need before you go looking. For instance, if you're driving and only taking out the luggage at the hotel or your destination, a piece on wheels probably will not be useful.

Do some comparison shopping online to get an idea of what you should (or should NOT) be paying. Luggage discounters sometimes offer good prices; check them out online.

Stock up on snack foods so you don't have to pay more at vending machines or convenience stores while on vacation.

If you like to read on the plane or at your destination, purchase magazines at your local discount department store or bring a book from home so you aren't tempted to buy when browsing through the airport stores or hotel gift shops.

Bottom line: If you want a cheap vacation, begin to prepare ahead of time. Make a list and start looking and planning to fill basic needs. Save your money for more important things!
